What
is Bible prophecy? Is it something important to know
about? Will having such knowledge make a difference
in my life?
These are questions the average person asks when being
confronted the first time about Bible prophecy. And,
they are good questions that deserve serious answers.
But, in most churches these questions are not being
addressed, and as a result Bible prophecy is nothing
less than foreign to the Christian experience of most
disciples.
The major reason for this situation is easily understood.
Quite simply, the prophetic portion of God's word is
flat-out neglected by the leadership of the overwhelming
majority of churches. They are fearful of possibly having
to change their minds regarding things their churches
have believed as immutable doctrine for generations,
and they would rather remain ignorant than to change.
Additionally, some are plainly fearful of what they
might learn about apocalyptic events, as if end-time
events constitute a dread disease of some kind. As a
result their congregants are woefully ignorant of what
God has said about the future.
Added to that is the fact that Bible prophecy is sometimes
called the "playground of fanatics". Unfortunately,
this is often the case when speakers and writers sensationalize
the truth rather than simply allowing it so speak for
itself.
Prophecy makes up a major part of the Holy Bible, and
to be ignorant of it - for whatever reason - is to do
our churches and ourselves a terrible disfavor. Paul
admonished the Thessalonian Christians (1 Thessalonians
4:13) to not be ignorant about the rapture of the church,
and Jesus Himself pronounced a blessing on those who
would read the prophetic word (Revelation 1:3).
