Mahmoud Abbas and Peace in the Middle
East
Israel
is about 8,000 miles from the east coast of the United
States, and what happens there is often ignored by most
American citizens. Except for a few minutes on the nightly
news about homicide bombings committed by Moslems against
Israeli civilians and soldiers there is actually very
little that the average American knows about what is
going on in that part of the world. And because the
world press in general hates the Jewish state a lot
of what people hear is from a very tilted and biased
viewpoint. For example, the Moslem murderers of innocent
men, women and children are often portrayed as “freedom
fighters” while the Israeli responses in defense
are seen as acts of “military aggression”.
The core of the fight that is going on presently is
the question of the so-called Palestinian State. There
never has been a Palestinian state, and until the 1960s
no body was really concerned about it. However, in an
effort to destroy the State of Israel the Arabs began
demanding that part of Israel be given to them as a
homeland and the city of Jerusalem be given to them
as their capital. The world media are refusing to admit
the Arabs already have a state and its name is Jordan.
Before his death Yasser Arafat was the president of
this imaginary state he called Palestine, and after
his death the Arabs chose a successor named Mahmoud
Abbas. It is clear many in the United States and Europe
are placing a lot of confidence in the recent election
of Mahmoud Abbas as the new Palestinian Authority president.
This event was hailed by governments around the world
as the first great step in bringing peace to the Middle
East because Abbas is labeled as a “moderate”
in the political mix.
Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, was born in
Safad in the mountains of Galilee (what is now northern
Israel) on March 26, 1935. When Israel became a state
again in 1948 Abbas went to Syria and taught in an elementary
school. He later earned a law degree from Damascus University
and a Ph.D. in history from the Oriental College in
Moscow. He spent time as a bureaucrat in Qatar and became
involved with radical Arabs. He co-founded Fatah along
with Yasser Arafat and finally was elected as the PLO
Executive Committee’s Secretary General in 1996
which placed him in the position of Arafat’s deputy.
Abbas is seen by many as being devoted to a peaceful
solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. For many
years he has maintained contact with liberals in the
Israeli government and was the PLO representative that
signed the Oslo Peace Accord with Israel in September,
1993. Because of this many Arabs consider him to be
too conciliatory toward Israel. However, there are some
radical and anti-Semitic skeletons in his closet that
the world is ignoring. Unfortunately even many in Israel
are ignoring this wolf that is disguised in sheep’s
clothing.
First is the matter of his being the co-founder of
Fatah, that large terrorist faction that is part of
the PLO. In 1965 he and Yasser Arafat put this group
together in order to intimidate by any means anyone
who might question the Arab demand for more of Israel.
You see, as a result of politics the Arabs have already
gotten about two-thirds of the land promised to the
Jews. A large chunk of the land east of the Jordan River
was promised to the Jews along with the land west of
the Jordan River. In fact, the Times of London
on 19 September 1919 called this land for the Jews “a
good military frontier”. But, a certain Arab leader
named Abdullah ibn-Hussein got some noisy tribesmen
together and took over the part east of the Jordan River.
So, in order to appease and keep them quiet the British
allowed them to keep it. Thus at the very start the
Jews lost the majority of the land promised to them.
Today that land is called Jordan. Fatah never mentions
this event and continues to demand another Arab state
be carved out of what little is left of Israel. Neither
does anyone else mention it.
Additionally, Fatah played a key role in the recent
election by restricting the amount of news coverage
received by the three candidates running against Abbas.
As you might guess, the Palestinian media are controlled
by Fatah. The New York Sun on December 31,
2004 quoted one Arab voter as saying, “People
are afraid to be seen even reading their literature.”
The PA is the largest Arab employer in Judea and Samaria,
and the message Arab voters received from the PA leaders
is that if anyone votes for the three challengers they
will lose their job or they can be assured they will
never be hired by the PA. That is not a small threat.
No wonder Abbas garnered nearly 70% of the vote!
Mahmoud Abbas wrote a book in 1983 called, “The
Other Side: The Secret Relationship Between Nazism and
the Zionist Movement” where he denied the Holocaust
even happened. Further, he played a key role in the
September, 1972 massacre of Israeli athletes at the
Munich Olympic games by providing the financing for
the attack; an attack carried out, by the way, by Arafat’s
Fatah faction of the PLO. 1
Abbas, like Arafat before him, has never genuinely
renounced his terrorist connections. Just one day after
the State Department gave $23.5 million in American
tax dollars to the Palestinian Authority (December 29,
2004) Abbas went to Jenin and campaigned with members
of the terrorist al-Aksa Martyrs Brigade. A picture
was taken of him riding on the shoulders of one of the
world’s bloodiest terrorists, Zakaria Zubeidi
When asked about the picture, especially after giving
the PA millions of American dollars, Secretary of State
Colin Powell admitted the photo was “disturbing”,
but said, “I don’t think it reflects Mr.
Abbas’ overall approach to governing.” 2
In the analysis it seems clear that Abbas’ supposed
“opposition” to terrorism is all politics;
a move to ingratiate himself to the western world, thus
hiding the way things really are. Consider, for example,
Jeff Jacoby’s statement that Abbas is portraying
himself as a moderate and that he, “...has no
moral problem with blowing up buses and cafes, he simply
thinks such methods are, for now, counterproductive.”
3
Yes, he is called a “moderate” by most
everyone. However, don’t count on the accuracy
of that label. He is a terrorist — Arafat wore
a uniform and Abbas wears a suit. As one commentator
put it, “The talk may change, but the symbols
and intent remains the same. And the Mainstream Media
is just lapping it up, not bothering to do any in-depth
questioning of what they’re willingly propagating
down the wire.” 4
All of this is common knowledge, so why are people
buying into Abbas and his program? Especially, why are
many Israeli’s supporting Abbas? It would seem
they, of all people, would question every aspect of
Abbas and his plan. Yet, they do not. Former Israeli
Prime Minister and current leader of the Labor Party
Shimon Peres recently said about Abbas, “I think
very highly about him and even more so about the way
he was elected.” Obviously some in the Israeli
government are willingly being duped. So, why is this
happening?
The answer to that question is multi-faceted, but there
are at least two answers that need to be considered
presently. First, many in the Israeli government are
humanists. That is, they believe in the ultimate goodness
of man and they believe that changes in the environment
will lead to changes in the human heart. They believe
if the Jews give enough of their land to the Arabs in
negotiations for peace (thus changing the environment)
then the Arabs will have a change in heart and will
no longer want to destroy Israel. The result, they say,
will be peace at last. This, of course, is absolute
nonsense because no amount of environmental change in
the form of land-for-peace will change the heart of
a terrorist. Yet, when a person disavows the sovereignty
and work of God in the human heart then this kind of
claptrap is about the only thing they can fall back
on.
Secondly, the people of Israel and many of her leaders
want peace so badly they will listen to just about anyone
who will guarantee cessation of hostilities. They simply
want to be able to enjoy what we enjoy in our country.
To not be unduly fearful about going to bed at night,
riding a bus or driving to work the next morning, sending
their children to school, enjoying a meal in a public
restaurant with their family, traveling on a public
highway, visiting their holy places, etc. Multitudes
of Jews have been killed while going about their everyday
business including a six-month old baby who was targeted
and shot through the head by a Moslem sniper while in
his stroller. Something, by the way, that hardly made
the evening news at the beginning of this current intifada.
Israelis are bone-tired of spilled Jewish blood and
the heavy, ever-present sense of uncertainty that fills
each day of their lives. They just want to live a life
of peace and to be left alone. A noble desire, but Mahmoud
Abbas is certainly not the one to fulfill their needs.
He is a deceiver and any trust they place in his intentions
will be rewarded with only more death and heartache.
Unfortunately that is the way it will be until Jesus
Christ replaces the final deceiver — the anti-Christ.
